Nearly two decades ago, comedian Jo Koy took a photo of the $1,000 check he was given for his first paid gig as a way to commemorate he had arrived.
“I remember thinking I was done and had made it,” Koy said during a recent telephone interview. “I thought to myself, ‘I’m a feature at a big-time comedy club and I’m going to start getting booked everywhere.’
“Next thing you know it’s six years later and I was still stacking shoes in a stock room and working other part-time jobs to pay the bills.”
Koy said he didn’t realize how hard it was going to be to make it in the world of stand-up comedy, and despite the years it took to rise to higher levels, he said he’s had a blast along the way.
