Car that plowed into police van in Paris was loaded gas canisters and guns

The car that plowed into a police van on Paris’ Champs-Elysees Monday was loaded up with Kalashnikov rifles, handguns and gas canisters, according to AFP.

The deadly cocktail could “potentially blow this car up,” Interior Minister Gerard Collomb noted, calling the incident an “attempted attack.”

But the 31-year-old man behind the wheel of the white Renault Megane died in the collision, and although the car did light up, no one else was injured in the assault, according to police.

A bomb squad is on the scene to make sure the car doesn’t blow, and police have closed two subway stops on the famed tourist thoroughfare, where just two months ago terrorists killed a cop and wounded two others in a separate attack, the AFP reports.

Police say the man lived in a suburb of Paris and was already known to authorities as a potential extremist.
